Good Points: Good building society.
Bad Points: See below.
General comments: Extremely poor bank, especially on line the e-banking staff. Some do not have a joined up approach to problems which according to them is not of their making. Their standard answer is they ask you to re-register which takes several days. In my case the re-registration failed to sort problem and ended up taking 3 weeks in that time I had very substantial amount locked away with no means of access.
They eventually agreed that the problems were of Nationwides making in that the card magnetic strip and chip were not correct and they found manufacturing faults and as the card reader needed to do any action was finding errors and locking me out over and over again.
Thought was all sorted but tonight online OK then logged off, despite using same logging in details as 30 minutes earlier again is locked out.
This is beyond a joke unless sorted dumping Nationwide.

Their Credit card does not charge the 2.75% currency conversion that other cards charge. I saved nearly £300 on my last foreign holiday.
When I'm transferring money between banks Nationwide takes two days to transfer money into other banks, but other banks take three days to put my money into my Nationwide account.
I've used Nationwide for many years and have always found them helpful when I've needed advice. In the present climate I have every confidence in them.

Overall it's a good service with easy navigation. Ease of access, although secure. Can clearly see debits and credits; can transfer money quickly.
Don't like the new 'hand held' machine that you need to transfer money from one account to another - cumbersome and hardly secure...

I find Nationwide have uncompetitive savings interest rates, internet system relies on lots of passwords and PINs which you realistically HAVE to write down unless you use the account very regularly. Then if you forget this data you are messed about for upto 2 weeks while they issue new cards, etc. Dealing with the staff in the HQ in Swindon can be hit and miss whilst the staff at my local branch don't know their own rules and have wasted several hours of my time and cost me weeks of lost intere ...

I've used Nationwide Internet Banking for several years. It does everything I need it to do and it does it efficiently. They have recently introduced the use of a card reader to improve security, but the downside to this is that you need to carry the card reader with you do certain transactions, such as transferring money between accounts. If you don't want to carry it around then the only alternative is to only do these transactions at home.

This was my my first foray into Internet Banking, at first I was quite nervous, that my finances would be open to hackers etc. That was 8 months ago, but I feel quite secure with Nationwide plus the sign on process is a breeze, I even got a card reader which gave me more confidence. Overall the interface is extremely user friendly... highly rated...

After many attempts to gain the home page, I decided internet banking is not for me. As with everything on the web, it does not live up to the publicity.

I live abroad and at present am having major problems with Natiowide internet banking, I am unable to transfer money from my flex account to a relatives flex account, when you eventually get to speak to someone (a major problem as their system does not seem able to recognise the numbers I press on my telephone) they just keep telling me that there is not a problem their end. I have even tried a friends computer as I thought it might be mine at fault.
Nationwide you are about to lose a loyal cust ...

Having used the Internet banking sites of several other banks, including HSBC and Halifax, the Nationwide site is my least favourite. The site is poorly designed and impossible to access without a mouse. On several occasions the site has frozen midway through a transaction leaving me unsure if the instruction was received or not. Replies to emails sent through the "secure messaging system" take over 1 week, rendering it pointless. I connect using a 8MB broadband connection and find the site slow ...

I've been with Nationwide since they started and to be honest have never had any real problem with them. In terms of internet banking it is very simple to use once setup.
Security
The security system is one of the better ones I've come across, people might think having to type in your userid, memorable data and then selecting random digits of your password with dropdown selectors a bit fiddly, but as an IT consultant I can tell you it's probably the most secure way of doing it as it stops keylo ...

My account with them is over a period of 10 years and it's difficult to find a better bank. I know I've looked. I find the internet a boon, owing to my age (77) I find it difficult to visit the branch. Nationwide seem to be on the ball with their system. Its simple and secure. There have been problems but they were sorted by bright peple on the help line.

On 22 April 2008 I had a Member Name, Customer Number Pass Number and Memorable Word. You now require User Name (and the system will not accept any combination of my name - which I do know because I have had it for 63 years) and a Pass Word instead of a Pass Number. You have not advised me of any of these changes. I'm anxious to do work on my Accounts TODAY and I cannot.
I am extremely annoyed about it particularly as you did this to me on 20 April 2008 which required me to visit your Branch Off ...

Do not seem to provide good enough service to those when overseas - as I am often - exasperating is the best word I can find. Slow to load sometimes - especially from abroad.
Some features too oftendo not work - refresh button does not always refresh.

I too used to rate Nationwide's online service as the best. However, the introduction of the card reader is a very retrograde step. Having invested heavily in an a very portable, pocket sized, all-singing, all-dancing 3G mobile phone with Wi-Fi and full web access in order to make banking transactions simple wherever I am in the world, the requirement to carry an additional device and my cash card have completely taken away this flexibility. Other banks have found other ways to improve security ...

The card reader security is too cumbersome. Am changing to First Direct because of it. Card reader. This means that you have to carry about your debit card and card reader to use Internet banking. A real pain, it has turned a great service into a usless one.
