Generally quick, Secure, easy to use, transferring money between accounts is easy as is setting up external transfers.
Introduction of card reader.
I've been with Nationwide since they started and to be honest have never had any real problem with them. In terms of internet banking it is very simple to use once setup.
Security
The security system is one of the better ones I've come across, people might think having to type in your userid, memorable data and then selecting random digits of your password with dropdown selectors a bit fiddly, but as an IT consultant I can tell you it's probably the most secure way of doing it as it stops keyloggers getting all your details.
Additional savings accounts
When you first get online banking is based on the flexaccount, which is Nationwides current account. However, once you've done that you can set-up as many 'e-savngs' accounts as you like and then it's very easy to transfer ad-hoc amounts into those account or to set-up regular transfers. As this can all happen behind the scenes it's very easy to set it all up so it happens just after payday and you can be surprised as to how much you can accumulate. If you have a Nationwide credit card that account is also included so you can check everything in one place.
Messaging
There is a nice and simple mechanism to communicate with the bank, very similar to e-mail and answers are generally within a day which isn't that bad.
Direct Debits/Standing Orders
Again easy to set-up, all you need is the details of the account you are paying to and away you go. You can set-up how much you want to pay, which day you want to pay it and how long you want to pay it for (obviously with direct debits it's different but you can see who you're paying).
Regular and ad-hoc payments.
Setting up a payment is very simple, you just give it a name, put in the sort code and account code (if it's a nationwide account it checks it for you and if it's another account of yours i.e. credit card or e-savings you can select from a list) and then you save it. You can then either may ad-hoc payments or you can set it up for regular payments. For this though you need the card reader which, as some of the other reviewers have said, I think is a retrograde step. Having said that the online instructions when this is asked for is very clear.
A nice touch on this is that when you're viewng your accounts there is a quick transfer mechanism where you can move money between your own online accounts, all you do is select the account you want to transfer from, then the one you want to transfer to and the amount and click go and that's it.
Foreign Currency payments.
For this you have to use SWIFT and to be honest all you can do online is fill in the form which you then have to fill out and send in so could be better I suppose, but it does work as I've used it to pay for holidays abroad.
So on the whole I don't have any real issues and have used it without problem for a number of years. Mind you I don't use AOL which does seem to cause problems.
